India and the Art of Motorcycle Riding

Travel outside the United States is not frequent for me. I’ve probably had to replace my passport more often than I’ve even used it. Now, travel throughout the vast US of A? I’m in. I primarily like to drive. Living in Oklahoma puts me smack dab in the middle of America, and I can head all four directions and hit somewhere great, and often do.

I had to dust off the old passport and get ready to visit my friends in India. I fired up Claude and asked it to prep a packing list for me in Things 3. Knocked that list out with days to spare and learned about power cables the rest of the world already knew about.

OKC → Chicago → Zurich → Mumbai = 30 hours in airports and planes. ONE WAY.

I could make fifty posts about the trip, and just may. It’s a complicated country, and I saw its wealth and poverty. There are political, social, and religious tensions that many of my friends living there shared with me.

This post is about motorcycles.

My son just bought a new cycle, a little 250 cc dual sport. It can hit backroads and then take on some single track. Now, when I was a kid, you walked right into the tag agency and told the lady at the desk that you needed your motorcycle endorsement. She’d ask, “Do you know how to ride a cycle?” You answer in the affirmative, and you’re good to go. I’m fifty; much time has passed.

This kid had to take a class. A class that cost $350 and included a written exam and driving test! So, while he’s stressing about figuring out his first bike on the wide open roads in OKC, I’m in India watching this happen! Here’s the video I texted him. 🙂
